UTV shock preload is how much the spring is squeezed before the machine's weight sits on it, and its job is to set ride height. When passengers, a cooler, or gear push your side-by-side (SxS) down, adding preload lifts it back to where it belongs. On a straight-rate spring, preload does not change how stiff the spring is.
