What Are Paddle Tires Used For?

Paddle tires are a rear UTV tire built for one job: moving your machine through loose, deep sand. Instead of gripping the surface the way a normal tread does, wide rubber paddles scoop into the sand and throw it backward, the same basic idea as a paddlewheel pushing a boat through water. That's what makes them so good at the dunes and so bad everywhere else.

Most of them ask us the same question before they buy: do I need these for regular Ozark riding? The honest answer is no. Here's what paddle tires actually do, how the front and rear setups differ, and what to run instead if dunes aren't most of your riding.

How Paddle Tires Work

A paddle tire doesn't rely on friction the way a mud or all-terrain tire does. Standard tread blocks bite into a surface and hold there. Paddle tires are built with wide, transverse rubber paddles that scoop into loose sand and push it backward. The tire excavates the sand instead of gripping it, using the resistance of that displaced sand to move the machine forward, the same mechanical principle as a paddlewheel.

The gaps between the paddles, called the void, are much bigger than the gaps between lugs on a mud tire. That oversized void keeps the tire from clogging. Centrifugal force throws the sand clear as the tire spins, so the paddles stay clean and keep digging instead of packing up with debris.

Why Paddle Tires Use a Different Build Than Your Trail Tires

Getting a UTV to float on top of sand instead of sinking into it takes more than paddle shape. It takes a different tire carcass entirely. Standard Ozark trail tires run heavy 8-ply or 10-ply construction built to resist punctures from limestone and roots. Paddle tires go the other direction: a thin, flexible 2-ply or 4-ply carcass that flattens out under the machine's weight to create a wide, soft footprint. That footprint is what keeps a loaded UTV on top of the sand instead of digging a hole and burying itself to the axles.

That flexible carcass is a trade-off by design. It's what makes flotation possible, and it's also why a paddle tire has almost no puncture resistance anywhere else.

Straight-Cut, V-Cut, and Staggered Paddles: Which One Do You Need?

Paddle geometry changes how the vehicle handles in sand. The three main styles aren't interchangeable:

Paddle count matters as much as paddle shape. More paddles isn't automatically faster. Too many for your horsepower makes the engine work harder to spin them, which stresses the CVT and slows you down instead of speeding you up. Too few on a high-horsepower turbo machine causes excessive wheel spin and a rough, bouncing ride without adding thrust. Do Paddle Tires Go on the Front or the Back?

Paddle tires are a rear-axle-only product. Don't run them on the front, for two reasons.

First, the front tires steer the machine. A paddle tire's rigid, horizontal blades give you almost no side bite, so a paddle tire on the front makes a UTV difficult to turn in sand.

Second, on a 4WD machine, a paddle tire spinning on the front axle throws sand up and back into the cab, straight at the driver and windshield.

Front sand tires solve a different problem. They need to stay light for flotation while still biting sideways enough to steer. That's why front sand tires use a ribbed or "mohawk" pattern, raised ridges running around the tire, instead of paddles. Some drag-focused setups run a smooth "smoothie" front tread instead, but that trades away almost all steering bite, so it's a poor choice for anything but straight-line racing. For trail riding and recreational duning, go ribbed. Can You Run Paddle Tires on Ozark Rock and Hardpack?

No. Paddle tires and hard, rocky Arkansas trails are a bad combination, and it's not just a rough ride.

On sand, a paddle tire is allowed to slip, and that slip protects your drivetrain. It acts like a pressure-release valve for the engine's torque. On hardpack or rock, the rigid paddles grip the unyielding surface instead of slipping. When your suspension unloads over a ledge and then lands hard with power on, that shock energy has nowhere to go. It transfers straight up the drivetrain instead of dissipating through tire spin. That's how CV joints and axle shafts snap. It's also how you burn up a CVT belt: the clutch keeps spinning against a tire that can't rotate freely on hard ground, and the belt glazes or snaps from the heat within minutes.

The tire itself takes damage too. That thin 2-ply or 4-ply carcass built for sand flotation has almost no puncture resistance against sharp limestone and roots. One rocky trail ride is enough to tear a sidewall or rip a paddle clean off the carcass.

And because paddle tires have no lateral tread, you lose cornering grip almost completely on hard ground. The machine plows straight instead of turning, which is a real handling risk on a trail with trees and drop-offs, not just an inconvenience.

What to Run Instead on Mixed Arkansas Trails

If you ride the Ozarks most weekends and hit the dunes once or twice a year, don't buy a dedicated paddle setup. Put the money into a quality all-terrain tire instead.

A good 8-ply all-terrain radial handles the rocky, mixed trails around Northwest Arkansas the way it's supposed to, and it still performs reasonably well in sand if you air down to around 10 PSI to widen the footprint. Mud-terrain tires are the opposite story. Their deep, widely spaced lugs dig straight down into sand instead of floating on top, so a mud tire will bury a machine faster than almost anything else you could run.

What PSI Do Paddle Tires Need?

Paddle tires need a lot less air than your trail tires. Standard UTV trail tires run about 12 to 18 PSI depending on load. To get the flotation a paddle tire needs in the dunes, you're dropping down to 3 to 5 PSI.

That's too low for a standard wheel. At that pressure, the tire bead will roll off the rim the first time you load it up in a hard turn. Running paddle tires at proper sand pressure means running beadlock wheels, which clamp the tire bead to the rim mechanically instead of relying on air pressure to hold it in place. If a standard rim is all you've got, don't drop below about 8 to 10 PSI in the sand.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paddle Tires

Can I run paddle tires on dirt trails?

No. Paddle tires grip hard surfaces instead of slipping, which can snap CV joints and axle shafts and burn out your CVT belt. They also have almost no lateral grip on hard ground, so cornering control drops off almost completely.

Do paddle tires go on the front of a UTV?

No. Paddle tires are a rear-only product. Front axles need a lightweight, ribbed sand tire built for steering, not paddles.

What's the difference between a paddle tire and a sand tire?

Sand tire is the broader category. Paddle tires are one type of sand tire, built with large scooping paddles for maximum thrust. Ribbed "mohawk" tires are a different sand tire built for the front axle, where steering matters more than thrust.

Do I need beadlock wheels to run paddle tires?

Yes, if you want to run them at proper sand pressure. Paddle tires need 3 to 5 PSI for full flotation, and a standard wheel will lose the bead at that pressure under a hard turn.
